By the time I was 25, I had taken more than 100 deer with my bow. During that time Alabama’s deer herd had grown to gigantic proportions, and deer hunters who hunted with their bows and rifles could take a buck and a doe each day from October 15 until January 31.

Early Season Deer Hunting with Marshall Collette

I bowhunt as well as rifle hunt. We tend to take our biggest bucks off both properties during muzzleloader season, which arrives at the end of October and continues through the first of November. The first week or two of rifle season generally starts the second Saturday of November. Like many other states, at the first of bow season, I do more scouting than I actually hunt.

Blacktails on Trail Cameras

One of the best blacktail hunts I ever had was the buck I took last year, in 2016. I had been watching this buck for 4 years. We had trail camera pictures of him. We had gotten to know this buck so well that we had named him Tall Four, because he was a 4x4 buck.

In 2011, I took my best blacktail buck that was a 4x4 that scored 109 inches - a trophy blacktail. To be considered a trophy blacktail taken with a bow, a buck has to score at least 90 inches. This buck was beautiful. Because the areas we hunt are so thick, most of the time we hunt from tree stands. We especially enjoy rattling in bucks during the rut.

The Long Hike Elk Hunt

We investigated the spot where the bull had been standing when I took the shot. Although we didn’t find any blood, we saw the direction where the bull had run. He’d gone into some really thick brush. Because night was approaching quickly, we decided to leave the bull and come back and try and find him the next day.
