We finally spotted a tahr that the guide suggested we take. To get to the tahr, we had to make a long hard climb up a big ridge. I took off my pack and laid it on the ground. I found the tahr in my Nikon scope and squeezed the trigger, but the tahr didn’t go down.

Pat Reeve Says He Shot Nicole’s Red Stag in New Zealand

Neither Nicole nor I had hunted red stag, but we had hunted elk. Elk and stag are somewhat similar. Some friends went with us, and the plan was for Nicole to hunt and take her stag first while I filmed. Then I would try and take a stag. We were hunting in the post-roar, the breeding time for stags. Finally, we got to the top of a ridge and thought the rams should be right below us. I was the fourth person in a parade of hunters going up the mountain, so the three in front of me had loosened all the rocks on the trail. The rocks were breaking loose under my feet. The only thought going through my mind was, “I’m about to die.”

On our Alaskan Dall sheep hunt after climbing high, we finally had spotted a Dall sheep ram that possibly was a legal shooter. To get to that ram, we had to climb further up a steep mountain over jagged and loose rocks. We came to a waterfall that made the rocky terrain wet and even-more dangerous to climb. Next we encountered a sheer rock face that we couldn’t climb up.
