Two Reasons Why Jim Shockey Hasn’t Hunted Saskatchewan Deer in Two Years
Editor’s Note: Internationally-known Mossy Oak Pro Jim Shockey hunts 365 days per year. His TV shows include the award winning “Jim Shockey’s Hunting Adventures,” Jim Shockey’s Uncharted,” and “Jim Shockey’s The Professionals.”
I'm often asked, “How did your hunting season go?” I really don’t know how to answer that question, because I hunt 365 days per year. I enjoy a never-ending hunting season. When most people ask that question, they’re talking about deer season. Last year’s deer season in Saskatchewan was unusual for us. The deer in Saskatchewan, where I live, have gone through some difficult times. Actually, I haven’t hunted whitetails there in the last 2 years, even though that’s where I was born and raised.
We've had an increase in the wolf population in Saskatchewan. We’re not allowed to shoot the wolves, and we can’t trap them unless we have trapping licenses. So, I've reduced the number of hunters on the land I lease in Saskatchewan from 130 per season to one person. The only person who has hunted my Saskatchewan property for the last 2 years is my daughter Eva. Another reason I haven’t hunted Saskatchewan for deer in the last 2 years is that my dad passed away a couple of years ago, and I had hunted whitetails every year for 43 years with my dad. So, the last 2 years I've given my Saskatchewan deer property a time of silence, but things seem to be improving. Currently, we’re planning to hunt Saskatchewan in the 2016 season.
