The demands of everyday life can really limit our free time. For this reason, marketing manager for Mossy Oak BioLogic and Nativ Nurseries, Jesse Raley, shed some light on early-season camp improvements.
“You don’t want to show up to camp to plant your food plots or go on that first hunt and have a bunch of maintenance hanging over your head,” Raley said. “The trick is summer preparation. Get up to your camp and dedicate a weekend to trimming roads and cleaning them up. Be sure that access roads to your food plots are clear of debris and that you can get the necessary equipment to them. This is also a good time to spray Roundup and get control of any weed problems. By doing all of this on a cleanup trip, you can focus on planting food plots and hunting when the time comes. Nothing puts a damper on a food plot planting or a hunting trip like having to spend the majority of your time doing maintenance.
“This is also a great time to address any wasp or mice problems that you may have. The last thing you want running around your camp is mice, and the discovery of a wasp nest while on a hunting trip can lead to some nasty stings. Go to camp prepared with wasp killing sprays and plenty of mouse traps. This way the problem won’t spring up again once you leave.
“Lastly, this is also a good time to attend to shooting stand and treestand issues, and it never hurts to cut a bunch of firewood. This way you do not have to deal with saturated wood in the fall months. If you’re short on firewood, this is a great time to lay a few green trees down and let them dry so they will be ready to burn in the fall.”
