I’ve been to four Bassmaster Classics working with my sponsors, but this will be the first time I’ve competed. Although I’ve been watching the Classics from the bleachers, I can’t imagine what pulling my boat into that arena with a big crowd and standing on the stage trying to talk will be like. There’s no way I can anticipate what that will be like, until I actually do it. People wonder how I’ll handle the pressure of the Classic. I’ve fished in a lot of big tournaments. The Classic is still just me against the fish. I don’t think I’ll have a problem with everything else that’s happening. My wife and family, as well as my sponsors, all will be there, and people I don’t even know who will come support me. I want to do well in front of all of them.
It’s hard for me to pick who may win the Classic because normally you’ll choose the local favorites who live closest to the lake. But Guntersville is such a popular lake that I believe probably everyone who is competing in the Classic has been there and fished there before. Their depth finders should be loaded with maps and waypoints for places where they expect to find bass. Matt Herren and Clent Davis may have a slight advantage because they live closer to the lake than many of us. Many of the Classic anglers have fished there 10 times or more.
