Nicole Reeve: The Crazy Year

The 2014/2015 was a crazy year for Pat and me both. We went to Alberta. As you read last week, Pat took a really-nice Shiras moose there. I wasn’t able to go on some of the hunts that Pat went on this year, because I was expecting a new little one. I had to stay behind on some of the hunts, but I was able to do some really-cool hunts. I went to Montana elk hunting; we did some whitetail hunts; and we spent a lot of time with our children this year. For us, family is what Mossy Oak and hunting are all about, and we enjoy that.
Our 11-year-old son, Carson, started off in the early season by shooting a buck in the full velvet that would score in the mid-150s Boone & Crockett. Next we took him to New Mexico on his first-ever youth elk hunt, and he took a very-nice bull that we called in for him. As the bull elk came in, he was bugling, and Carson took the bull. All the way to New Mexico Carson had said, “Dad, I want to shoot a bull that’s bugling.” Pat told Carson, “You're going to shoot one when we get the perfect opportunity for you to shoot a nice bull.” Carson made a perfect shot on his bull when the elk was bugling. Then once we got Carson back to our home in Minnesota, he took a very-nice whitetail buck there. So, although Pat and I enjoyed some great hunts this past year, some of our favorite hunts were with our children.
I'm often asked, “What’s going through hunting season like while you’re pregnant, and what do you think your life will be once you have a child?” I think it’s been absolutely wonderful being pregnant and still going on some hunts. All the people we've met along the way this past year and our family have absolutely embraced the idea of me having a baby and hunting.
