When Just for Hunting, the company I work for, hunts Merriam’s turkeys, we enjoy going to the Little Powder River in Wyoming. We have a nice lodge there with good bunks, and we prepare the food. One of the advantages of this hunt is that these birds are never hunted until we hunt them. The terrain there can be classified as high desert hunting, and we hunt the Little Powder River that homes numbers of hardwoods. On this hunt, you can take two Merriam’s gobblers per hunter.
We also suggest that our hunters bring their varmint rifles. Then if they tag out early, they can shoot prairie dogs. On our prairie dog hunts, you can typically shoot as much ammunition as you can bring.
All the lands we hunt are private lands, and you’ll always have a guide with you who knows the land and the turkeys that live there. The male Merriam’s turkey is one of the prettiest turkeys we hunt with white feathers on his back and white tips on his tail feathers. These characteristics make the Merriam’s relatively easy to spot from a long way off.
Calling the Merriam’s turkey is no different than calling any of the other species of wild turkeys. But the terrain where we hunt Merriam’s is much different than where we hunt turkeys in the East. In Wyoming, you’ll have a true western style turkey hunt. This is one of my favorite hunts to go on and to guide on, since most hunters will double down on turkeys and prairie dogs. We have a very good time.
