Spawning Benches for Bass

Fish managers often debate about what are some of the things we can do to help encourage spawning in bass species. Creating the right type of habitat is important and in northern states, fish managers sometimes use spawning benches to promote the reproduction of smallmouth bass. While largemouth bass, rock bass, and sometimes bluegill also use spawning benches, it is the spawning of smallmouth bass that inspired the design.

When the bucks stood-up, they didn’t offer any shots. We watched them walk and then trot away, going from 10 to 200 yards without giving Julie a shot. Finally the bucks stopped at some cedar trees. Two of the three bucks bedded-down in the shade where we could watch them. The biggest buck remained standing in the sun.

Julie’s Birthday Brown Bear with ProStaffer Rick Kreuter

When we were about 400-yards out, glassing the bear from the boat, we spotted an eddy where the wind was swirling in front of the boat. For no reason at all, the wind turned 180 degrees and was now hitting us in the face, giving us the perfect wind to stalk the bear. We decided Julie was getting more and more birthday presents as this hunt went along.

More teal in early-season bag, higher possession limit encourage hunters

This fall, early-teal-season hunters may have an opportunity to bag more teal. Additionally, if the Department of Interior finalizes the waterfowl harvest regulations as initially proposed, the possession limit would increase. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a six-teal bag limit for early teal season and a possession limit for all seasons equivalent to three daily bag limits.
